Presque Isle, Maine—Members of the Wintergreen Arts Center’s Board of Directors recently met with local business leader Brian Hamel to begin strategic planning for the Presque Isle-based nonprofit organization. Founded in 2006, Wintergreen serves over 5,500 people annually with quality arts programming for children of all ages, family-friendly signature events, and adult programs. The Center is located at 149 State Street.
“Over the years, Wintergreen has successfully navigated the many ups and downs of being a nonprofit art center in a rural community,” said Dottie Hutchins, executive director. “Though amazing community support, generous grant makers, and good old fashioned hard work, the Center has grown to become a mainstay here in Aroostook County.”
Wintergreen first opened its doors at the Aroostook Centre Mall; the creative vision of Founder Lara Cannon. In 2008, two dedicated supporters purchased the historic Wight Furniture building at 149 State Street and gave Wintergreen an extraordinary 10-year free lease. That lease expires October 31, 2018, changing not only Wintergreen’s ability to meet its future, long-term financial needs, but the possible longevity of its current location as well.
“Our board is exploring all options,” said Hutchins. “And, we recognized that we needed an experienced facilitator to help us through the process. We are thrilled that Brian Hamel not only stepped up to help, but is donating his time and service to our organization. He is making a huge difference in the future of Wintergreen and the people we serve.”
Brian Hamel is the managing partner of Thompson-Hamel, LLC, a full-service financial firm with offices in Presque Isle and Bangor. Hamel is also well known as head coach for the Aroostook County Snowdogs Basketball Team.
“I’m impressed with the level of passion each board member brings to the organization’s creative mission,” said Hamel. “I think the Center is a unique community asset and I look forward to assisting its leadership in coming up with a plan to keep the Wintergreen Arts Center viable and growing for years to come.”
