WHO WE ARE: In 2026, Wintergreen Arts Center celebrates 20 years of stimulating creativity and curiosity through the arts in Aroostook County. Our dedicated, talented team has grown our programming to include a creative preschool, outdoor learning for ages 0-5, afterschool and summer arts programs for grades K-8, age-specific workshops for youth and adults, signature events for family members of all ages, and community gallery showings. We are looking for the right person to join us as we begin our next chapter at Wintergreen.

Job Purpose and Context

The Executive Director serves as the organization’s chief executive officer. Working with the Board of Directors and staff, the Executive Director will provide strategic and organizational leadership for Wintergreen Arts Center, ensuring operational alignment with the strategic plan. Importantly, the Executive Director will think systematically about Wintergreen’s role in determining the ideal balance of achieving direct impact through its programs, and partnership to magnify the power and capacity of Wintergreen to support creativity and a love of the arts.

The Executive Director will be part of an organizational culture that embraces honesty, kindness, creativity, curiosity, community building, and collaboration.  Understanding and encouraging these qualities is essential to the success of this position. Leading with compassion, bringing a collective, team-based approach to working with staff, Board, and the community, and deploying exceptional communication skills, the Executive Director will set the tone for a culture that promotes and inspires continuous learning, creativity, and love of the arts.

Core Responsibilities

  • Strategic, Visionary Leadership
    • Build and maintain a high-performing organization that provides employees with an inclusive environment in which they can do their best work.
    • Provide a vision, measurable goals, and strategies to achieve the organization’s mandate. Lead periodic strategic planning processes and lead staff in implementation of strategic plans and programs.
    • Promote organizational commitment to a climate of equity, diversity, and inclusion through interaction with the Board of Directors, staff, contractors, clients, partners, funders, and the community.
    • Report regularly to the Board of Directors on matters affecting the mandate and smooth running of the organization:
      • Preparing, soliciting, and sharing agendas and all necessary background documents prior to Board Meetings.
      • Work closely with the Board Chair to understand and advance appropriate board governance; maintain clear lines of communication and provide well-defined opportunities for board engagement.
      • Work with the Board of Directors to balance short-term objectives with long-term vision to drive the organization’s strategic direction.

  • Financial Management and Operational Compliance
    • Prepare, monitor, and report on an annual budget and submitting annual budgets for approval by board.
    • Ensure the organization stays in good financial standing, including:
      • Proposing Auditor / Accountant to Board for approval.
      • Managing annual audit (as necessary) and tax returns with Auditor / Accountant.
    • Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures.
    • Ensure Wintergreen is adhering to the strategic plan, delivering status reports to the Board.
    • Development of internal management reporting capabilities.
    • Improve administrative and operational accounting services.
    • Manage administrative record-keeping, including scanning and electronically filing key documents in shared drive.
    • Manage vendor relationships including selection and contract renewals, including technology, insurance, benefits, retirement, liability, and other outsourced providers. Ensure all vendors and engagements align with Wintergreen’s stated values. Monitor and maintain all vendor accounts and contacts, including researching and privileging women and BIPOC-owned businesses. Periodically review and analyze vendors to determine if a change in vendors might be warranted.
    • Ensure that the organization is efficiently organized to comply with human resource processes and requirements, taking into account federal changes in personnel administration and payroll taxation, in accordance with legal and internal policies.
    • Assist with administration of benefit programs including preparation and maintenance of associated records and reports. 
    • Maintain personnel job descriptions, employee handbooks, financial manual, and employment policies. 

  • Staff Support and Supervision
    • Directly supervise all employees.
    • Oversee development of a comprehensive onboarding and staff training program, particularly for new staff.
    • Determine staffing requirements to meet organizational needs.
    • Hire and supervise internal staff and contractors and management of consultants, as required.
    • Engage and develop a talented team whose expertise, passion, and professionalism will drive continued expanded impact and influence.
    • Create an inclusive workplace environment that attracts, retains, and develops underrepresented talent for the organization; encourages open communication.
    • Delegate strategic objectives to leaders and teams within the organization with clear and explicit intent; build a strong sense of empowerment and shared responsibility across the organization.
    • Hold the organization accountable for its commitments, provide clarity, fairness, and constructive feedback, and motivate team members to achieve their goals.

  • Fundraising
    • Lead fundraising efforts and maintain relationships with funding agencies.
    • Maintain grant calendar and lead grant-writing efforts.
    • Build compelling business cases and proposals.
    • Develop an annual fundraising plan to ensure Wintergreen’s’ sustainability and diverse revenue streams.
    • Expand local revenue generating and fundraising activities to support existing program operations and expansion.

  • Communications
    • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to effectively roll out Wintergreen’s mission, vision, ensuring clear and consistent messaging.
    • Develop and implement a communications policy, setting clear guidelines for internal and external communications.
    • Maintain and develop communication of Wintergreen’s work on external platforms including website, social media, and outreach to the community.
    • Create and manage newsletter.
    • Deepen and refine all aspects of communications—from web presence to external relations with the goal of creating a stronger brand.

  • Partnership and Relationship-Building
    • Represent Wintergreen at local meetings and events.
    • Establish partnerships that advance the goals of Wintergreen.
    • Build partnerships with other local and regional organizations to increase participation in Wintergreen programs.
    • Use external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities.

COMPENSATION: $44,000 – $54,000 commensurate with experience.
